The Erich Kästner School in Oelde is a special needs school for children and adolescents with physical and motor development challenges. It provides space for 180 students who are cared for full-time over their entire school years spanning eleven years. The outdoor area is of high architectural quality, and the designers from wbp Landschaftsarchitekten were awarded the Special Prize of the German PLAYGROUND Award 2015 for their concept. The students were involved from the beginning in designing the cross-class play and communication landscape and explicitly requested "normal" play and activity options, such as a soccer field. The field measures 380 m² and features the durable, highly robust TerraGrass synthetic turf system with curled blades, making it versatile for various sports. Polytan also provided the shock-absorbing surface in the swing area. The 180 m² area, with a thickness of 45 mm, was installed in two shades of yellow. A lighter, delicate hue is achieved by a granulate mix of 60% citron yellow, 20% earth yellow, 10% eggshell, and 10% pearl white. A slightly darker and earthier blend is composed of 80% earth yellow, 10% citron yellow, and 10% beige.
